Easton and Martyr Worthy’s U13 side enjoyed a straightforward home win over Amport on Sunday in the first round of the Cup with no loss of wicket.
Bowlers Spencer Lee and Ollie Miles kept the Amport batsmen penned in with straight deliveries of good length. Miles took a wicket in his first over cleaning out the off stump of their opener. Tight fielding next led to a run out. It was soon followed by a wicket for Lee and another for Miles. A change of bowling saw Alex Lock pick up two wickets, one bowled and the other forcing the batsman to mistime an on-drive straight to Miles who took the catch. Ben Cholerton bowled 2 maidens in his 3 overs while Charlie Freemantle’s first ball removed the leg stump of Amport’s no 3 batsman who batted very steadily for a respectable 15. Amport saw out the 20 overs for the loss of 8 wickets, posting a total of 58.
Easton defended the first 2 overs from Amport before Will Wickham opened up and hit two boundaries in the third over, one a pull to leg from a shorter ball, and the other a sweetly timed cover drive up the hill to the longest boundary on the pitch. There were a couple of early scares but great communication between Wickham and Luke Whittome kept the runs coming, with Whittome contributing a steady 21 and Wickham hitting the winning runs in the 10th over to seal a very composed victory, and finish on an unbeaten 24.
