EASTON U13A BOWL TO VICTORY AGAINST ST CROSS B

Easton built on last week’s exciting Cup win against Trojans to produce a devastating display of bowling and fielding, dismissing St Cross B for 32 to win by 99 runs.

St Cross won the toss and put Easton into bat on a grey windy morning. Will Upcraft and Henry Compton opened the batting for Easton and set a steady pace of 4-6 runs per over. The partnership brought up the 50 in the tenth over. With both Will and Henry looking comfortable, a mix up over a quick single saw Henry runout for 22. Two balls later, Jamie Kennard was caught and suddenly Easton were 61-2. Sam Collins came in at number four and looked to pressurize the bowlers, scoring seven in his first six deliveries, before being dismissed by a very sharp caught and bowled chance.

The wickets continued to tumble in steady succession; first Will Upcraft was caught for an impressive 24 runs, followed by Oscar Shaheen for four with the score on 83 for five overs from 15 overs. This brought captain, Arthur Lee to the crease to join his brother, Spencer. The pair quickly settled into a steady rhythm of singles and twos pushing the scores along for the next 10 overs to a very respectable 130. With Arthur on 15, he was called for a quick single on the penultimate ball of the innings, but was run out by some very smart fielding. Spencer held his nerve to close the innings with a final single, ably backed up by Doug Rigden. The innings closed with Easton 131-6.

The sudden shower, which delayed the start of the St Cross innings, was not enough to dampen Arthur Lee’s determination to avenge his run out. He generated impressive pace and accuracy, claiming the first wicket with his third ball. By the end of the third over, St Cross had moved the score to 10-1, with Arthur continuing to bowl very tightly and well supported by Sam Collins. The pair then combined to dismiss the other St Cross opener with Arthur taking a good catch off Sam’s second ball of the fourth over. After a couple of dot balls, Sam then produced two consecutive unplayable deliveries to clean bowl the no 4 and no 5 batsmen. Sam finished his second over with a three wicket maiden, leaving St Cross in disarray on 10-4.

Not to be outdone, Jamie Kennard bowled a wicket maiden in the following over. Great fielding by Felix De Merode and excellent keeping by Will Wickam ensured that Easton continued to keep the runs down.

Sam Collins weighed in with a couple of further wickets, finishing with 5 wickets for 8 runs from four overs - Easton’s first ‘fifer’ of the season!

Spencer maintained the pressure on St Cross by clean bowling the number 8 batsman. With St Cross on 32-8 at the end of the twelfth over, Oscar Shaheen then weighed in with two quick wickets – the first a fine catch by Ben Cholerton, and the second, caught and bowled by himself.

St Cross were all out for 32, leaving Easton the winners by 99 runs.
