On a sultry afternoon and after a lot of rain, the match was on and Skip Foreman, having won the toss, elected to bowl on a very wet wicket.
So wet, it transpired, that there was very little lateral movement and all bowlers struggled to make quick inroads with the exception of debutant u15 Spencer Lee whose spell of 7 overs produced 2 wickets for 17 runs. Ray Lockyer 0 for 8 off 5, Jamie Banks 1 for 38 off 10, evergreen Trevor Yeates 1 for 28 off 10, Ben Stanbrough 2 for 29 off 7 and Trev Foreman 0 for 12 off 3 all stuck to their task to restrict St Mary’s to 135 for 6 off their 42 overs.
Easton’s innings got off to the worst possible start with normally reliable John Sparks and Trev Foreman back in the pavilion without a run on the scoreboard. Jamie Banks and man of the match Adrian Lee, on a drying wicket now providing lateral movement, put on a great partnership of 91 runs when Adrian was bowled for a courageous 44 ( 6 fours)and 1 over later Jamie Banks departed for an equally courageous 42 ( 2 sixes and 4 fours).
So Eastons were 92 for 4 after 27 overs with Dave Ling going well. Dave then fell for 15 (1 six and 2 fours) to a good catch in the covers and Easton’s innings had collapsed to 120 all out with the last 7 wickets falling for 11 runs. St Mary’s man of the match, evergreen Ian Bentley took 4 for 24 including 3 wickets in the 29th over.
Eastons took 6 points from the match and will be looking to bounce back with a winning performance at second placed Silchester next week.
