EMWCC pluck victory from the jaws of defeat

The 9 men of Easton together with the brave help of Andy Macleod, recovering from eye surgery, in the field pulled off a remarkable victory at Aldershot.

Skip Foreman lost the toss (first fine of the day!) and Easton was asked to bat on a wicket showing the wear & tear of the u14 match that took place in the morning!

John Sparks and Trev Foreman opened and John, for the second week running, getting the best ball of the innings, departing with his score on 6. Trev was joined by evergreen club legend Martin Hall and they put on a partnership of 111 to take Easton’s score to 116 for 1 off 28 overs. Martin was then caught for a hard hit 49 (the next fine for jug avoidance!) which included 5 fours. Dave Ling holed out on the boundary for 6 and Trev was run out for 50 (with 4 fours) with the score on 144 off 33 overs. Easton battled on, reaching a score of 175 as a result of runs from Ben Stanbrough and Rae Lockyer with a well struck 18 not out (2 fours) from young Ethan Brackstone.

Varney (26),Pippett (36)and McGovern (24),the first 3 batsman for Aldershot all got runs in getting Aldershot to 68 for none and 107 for 3 off 24 overs, well ahead of the asking rate. The deadlock was broken by the run-out of the hard hitting Pippett by a direct throw from Rae Lockyer. Enter man of the match Ben Stanbrough ( & now proud holder of the pink cap) who bowled with zip and guile to finish up with 4 for 30 from his 10 overs with great support from debutant Nathan Holmes who bowled equally well with figures of 1 for 27 off his 10 overs.

Ethan Brackstone ( none for 40 off 10) bowled by far the best balls of the day without any luck as all the edges he got somehow evaded the fielders to race to the boundary! Rae Lockyer’s (3 for 33 off 10) second spell was right on the money and his 2 wickets in consecutive balls in the 40th over swung the match Easton’s way. This left Aldershot 164 for 9 in the 40th over. Trev Foreman finished things off with the final wicket with his 2nd ball of the 41st over giving Easton a remarkable win by 11 runs and 23 points to Aldershot’s 10.
